GEARHEADS

STEVEN LAURIE (Toronto, ON)
RAY LODOEN (Saskatoon, SK)

JUNE 11 - JULY 30, 2010
artist talk & performance: June 11 - 7pm
2nd performance & workshop June 12

Gearheads brings Laurie and Lodoen together to perform and present their (dis)functional hybrid mechanical constructions which speak to notions of masculinity and utility. Laurie will use his Rubber Burning machine as a mark-making device and display large format 3D prototype machine images and video monitors playing documentation of several performances. Lodoen presents a pair of the functional full-scale ‘rat-bike’ chopper motorcycles which he designs and builds from the ground up, contributing his own plumes to the smoke-show performance.

(IN)ACCESSIBLE CITY

////September 10 to October 22, 2010
artist talk & closing reception: October 15 - 7pm

From September 10th to October 22nd, 2010, AKA gallery presents the exhibition InAccessible City, an up-close and interactive look at issues around mobility, accessibility and what life in a wheelchair is really like. The exhibition will feature a monumental painting installed on the billboard spanning the top floor of the building’s exterior. Artist Matthew Proctor will use a mobile painting device connected to his wheelchair as a mark-making tool to create the painting. To put things in perspective, the largest painting at the Louvre, The Wedding Feast at Cana by the Mannerist Italian painter Paolo Veronese measures 21 feet by 32.5 feet, or 682.5 square feet. At 14 feet by 50 feet, Matthew Proctor’s painting will take up a whopping 700 square feet of real estate.

For the duration of the exhibition and through two special workshops being held during Culture Days, AKA’s main gallery space will become a production centre and workspace. Artist and curator Jeff Nachtigall, will facilitate this hands-on workshop where people with limited mobility and able-bodied persons alike will be able to use adaptive mark making equipment with the results being displayed on the gallery walls. Come to AKA Gallery and make your mark. The painting workshops are free and open to the public.
